The EU Human-Centric Approach to AI: Foundational Elements for a Global Framework

The “human-centric” approach to AI has gained traction in international technology governance and diplomacy. However, while it is today explicitly stated as the foundation of multiple AI governance frameworks and principles worldwide, there is still no consistent pathway, nor a definitional grounding work that frames the human-centric approach to AI.

This report has been developed for the purpose of defining and clarifying the key features of the EU’s human-centric approach to AI. It is authored by DataEthics.eu’s Research Director Gry Hasselbalch and affiliated scholar Carolina Aguerre.

Data Ethics of Power – A Human Approach in the Big Data and AI Era

Data Ethics of Power takes a reflective and fresh look at the ethical implications of transforming everyday life and the world through the effortless, costless, and seamless accumulation of extra layers of data. By shedding light on the constant tensions that exist between ethical principles and the interests invested in this socio-technical transformation, the book bridges the theory and practice divide in the study of the power dynamics that underpin these processes of the digitalization of the world. The book is authored by DataEthics.eu’s Research Director Gry Hasselbalch and will be available Dec 2021, Edward Elgar Publishing.

Read critical acclaims by Frank Pasquale – author of the Black Box Society and New Laws of Robotics, Aimee van Wynsberghe – Director of the Sustainable AI Lab University of Bonn, John C. Havens – Executive Director of the IEEE Ethically Aligned Design Global Initiative and Evan Selinger – author of Re-engineering Humanity.

White Paper: Data Pollution & Power

Data Pollution is to the big data age what smog was to the industrial age. Our response to data pollution will develop much like our reaction to traditional forms of pollution—just much faster and hopefully with dedication and great force. This white paper describes a nascent environmental data pollution movement. It frames data pollution in the context of powers and interests exploring eight domains in which data pollution has the greatest impact: Nature, Science & Innovation, Democracy, Human Rights, Infrastructure, Decision-Making, Global Opportunities, and Time. The main objective is to ensure that data pollution of AI in particular is included in the global sustainable development agenda.

The white paper is authored by DataEthics.eu’s Research Director Gry Hasselbalch and published by the Bonn Sustainable AI Lab.

A Data Democracy Comes With Individual Data Control

In this book (September 2021), we look at the growing trend of personal data stores or personal data intermediaries, helping individuals take control over and empower themselves with their data. If we want to create a fair and equal society, we call it a data democracy, neither state nor big companies should control our data – and thus our lives. This does not mean that the state or companies do not sit on some of our data. But you are in the driver’s seat and retain control of your full profile.

Games Are Gambling With Childrens Data

Despite clear age rules many games are ignoring the fact that children are using their services. Children have a right to digital privacy and protection against advertisments (especially personalised) but they are not protected at all in most games. This report from IDA and DataEthics.eu, is a first look into GameTech, Data and Children.

The Report: Addressing Ethical Dilemmas in AI: Listen to the Engineers

September 2020, engineers from across Europe and beyond meet at a hackathon organised by the Association of Nordic Engineers (ANE), the Data Ethics ThinkDoTank (DataEthics.eu), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and researchers from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Copenhagen to find solutions to ethical challenges in AI.

Data Ethics In Public Procurement

This white paper from 2020 provides a detailed map for public procurers to choose AI-based services and solutions that put data ethics, democracy and fundamental rights first. It is an initial step towards creating a standardized framework for the questions and considerations public procurement processes should include to adopt trustworthy AI and reward the European development of it.

The whitepaper was funded by Luminate.

DataEthics – The New Competitive Advantage

The book Data Ethics – The New Competitive Advantage published in 2016 by Gry Hasselbalch and Pernille Tranberg was one of the early books to describe not only the privacy implications of the commercial exploitation of big data, but the broader social and ethical implications. It pictured the emerging movement of the mid 2010s to take back control of our data from powerful big tech Silicon Valley actors.

It was the first book to use the term “data ethics” and describe it in detail. Its crucial contribution was its constructive approach that sought out the alternative engineering and company practices.
