Dermed er Google den suver\u00e6nt st\u00f8rste m\u00e6cen for europ\u00e6isk journalistik. Den ambiti\u00f8se rapport: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.otto-brenner-stiftung.de\/fileadmin\/user_data\/stiftung\/02_Wissenschaftsportal\/03_Publikationen\/AH103_Google_EN.pdf\">Google, the media patron&nbsp;How the digital giant ensnares journalism<\/a>&nbsp;dokumenterer Googles rolle i den europ\u00e6iske nyhedsjournalistik &#8211; og unders\u00f8gelsen er virkelig v\u00e6rd at l\u00e6se.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I f\u00f8lge den 125-sider lange unders\u00f8gelse begyndte Googles rolle som m\u00e6cen for europ\u00e6isk journalistik i Frankrig som et modsvar p\u00e5 et stigende politisk pres mod Google. Ledere beskrev efterf\u00f8lgende dette pres som et <em>wake up-call<\/em> for virksomheden.<\/p>\n<p>I 2013 oprettede Google s\u00e5ledes en fond (60 millioner euro) for at st\u00f8tte franske presseudgiveres innovationsprojekter.&nbsp;Den franske fond blev&nbsp;skabelon for Googles&nbsp;digitale nyhedsinitiativ (DNI), som virksomheden lancerede i hele Europa i 2015. Her var kernen Googles Digital News Innovation Fund p\u00e5 150 millioner euro (mere end en milliard danske kroner), som selskabet brugte til at fremme projekter fra 2015 til 2019. Pengene blev givet gennem stipendier, tilskud, journalistik-konferencer og p\u00e5 andre m\u00e5der til hundredvis af etablerede medievirksomheder, start ups, enkeltpersoner og forskningsinstitutioner i hele Europa med henblik p\u00e5 engagement i innovationsprojekter.<\/p>\n<p>Efterf\u00f8lgende i perioden 2019-2021 forpligtede Google sig p\u00e5 at uddele yderligere 300 millioner dollars til journalistik under Google News Initiative (GNI) &#8211; Googles &#8220;<em>indsats for at hj\u00e6lpe journalistik med at trives i den digitale tidsalder<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><b>Tyskland er den st\u00f8rste europ\u00e6iske modtager<br><\/b>Som eksempel arrangerer Google Journalistik-konferencer og finansierer stipendier gennem <i>Reuters Institute for studiet af journalistik <\/i>ved <i>Oxford Universitet<\/i>. Siden 2015 har de modtaget over en million pund fra Google \u00e5rligt for sine studier om brugen af digitale medier.<\/p>\n<p>I februar 2020 stod der f\u00f8lgende p\u00e5 <a href=\"https:\/\/reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk\/risj-review\/google-news-initiative-and-oxford-university-agree-extension-support-digital-news\">Reuters Institutes website<\/a>: &#8220;<em>The <a href=\"https:\/\/newsinitiative.withgoogle.com\/\">Google News Initiative<\/a> and Oxford University&nbsp;have agreed on an extension to the current grant for the Reuters Institute <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalnewsreport.org\/\">Digital News Report<\/a> and the related Digital News Project, for a further three years from 2021 to 2023.<\/em>&#8221; L\u00e6ngere nede i teksten understreger Oxford University den &#8216;akademiske uafh\u00e6ngighed&#8217; ved denne rapport, som modtager finansiering fra Google: &#8220;<em>The Reuters Institute Digital News Report is a unique independent academic study which has been supported by a wide range of partners since its creation in 2012<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>Storbritannien, hvor University of Oxford er beliggende, er kun den tredje st\u00f8rste modtager af finansiering fra Google. Den st\u00f8rste er Tyskland, hvor respekterede nyhedsorganisationer som Neue Z\u00fcrcher Zeitung, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, der Spiegel, Zeit Online, Funke Mediengruppe, Dumont og Gruner +, har modtaget finansiering. I Tyskland alene gav Google 21,5 millioner euro til finansiering fra DNI-fonden for medieprojekter fra 2016 til 2019.<\/p>\n<p><b>N\u00e5r halen logrer med hunden<br><\/b>Hvad med armsl\u00e6ngdeprincippet, n\u00e5r universiteter og medieindustri modtager finansiering fra verdens f\u00f8rende overv\u00e5gningskapitalist?<\/p>\n<p>Finansieringen fra Google gives som &#8220;no-strings&#8221;-tilskud &#8211; det vil sige uden nogen krav, hvilket g\u00f8r modtagerne fri til at danse, som de vil. Men som enhver kritisk journalist ville vide, og som denne rapport dokumenterer, er tingene ikke helt s\u00e5 enkle.<\/p>\n<p>Rapporten fastsl\u00e5r, at &#8220;<em>p\u00e5 intet tidspunkt i nogen af vores \u200b\u200binterviews har nogen h\u00e6vdet, at Google havde fors\u00f8gt at p\u00e5virke dem med sin DNI-fond. Tv\u00e6rtimod, mange af de respondenter, hvis medieorganisationer modtog Google-finansiering, har afvist at kunne have v\u00e6ret manipuleret&#8221;.<\/em>&nbsp;Ingen armsl\u00e6ngder problemer d\u00e9r &#8211; i f\u00f8lge modtagerne selv.<\/p>\n<p>Men i f\u00f8lge studiet er der \u201c<em>evidence to suggest that Google used the Digi\u00adtal News Initiative as an enabler on regulatory issues, allowing the company to push its own political interests\u201d. This is both regarding potential impacts of the EU copyright reform and the e-Privacy Regulation and regarding other cases<\/em>&#8220;. (har valgt ikke at overs\u00e6tte dette til dansk, da formuleringen her er meget specifik, red.)<\/p>\n<p>Unders\u00f8gelsen konkluderer: &#8220;<em>Google bruger s\u00e5ledes sit nyhedsinitiativ til ikke blot at opretholde forbindelserne med medieindustrien, men ogs\u00e5 som et argument for at lobbye EU-Kommissionen i Bruxelles<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Pr\u00e6ference for dataprojekter og robotjournalistik<\/strong><br>Alt i alt blev kun ca. seks procent af DNI-midlerne udbetalt til nonprofit-medier (ca. seks millioner euro), men n\u00e6sten 75 procent gik til kommercielle medier (ca. 100 millioner euro). I denne sammenh\u00e6ng ser det s\u00e5ledes ikke ud til, at innovation rimer p\u00e5 startups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I et interview bliver Ludovic Blecher, chef for Googles DNI-fond, spurgt, hvordan man definerer innovation, og han svarede: \u201d<em>Det afh\u00e6nger af dit udgangspunkt. I medierne er innovation ikke det samme for en lille spiller, som det er for en \u00e6ldre spiller med hundreder af \u00e5rs historie, og det er forskelligt afh\u00e6ngigt af landet. S\u00e5 vi bad folk forklare os, hvorfor deres projekt er innovativt og give os indikatorer, der hj\u00e6lper os med at vurdere innovationsniveauet afh\u00e6ngigt af deres udgangspunkt&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Men unders\u00f8gelsen konkluderer, at der ser ud til at v\u00e6re en &#8220;<em>klar pr\u00e6ference for projekter vedr\u00f8rende data- og robotjournalistik<\/em>&#8220;. For Google synes innovation s\u00e5ledes at rime p\u00e5 stadig mere digitalisering og dataficering af sektoren&#8230; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dette er ikke overraskende set i lyset af, at Google er en af verdens st\u00f8rste overv\u00e5gningskapitalister. Ej heller er det overraskende, at unders\u00f8gelsens dataanalyse antyder, at Googles finansiering af medieindustrien styres af eksisterende \u00f8konomiske strukturer og sandsynligvis endda arbejder for at styrke dem: de rige bliver rigere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Men hvad der virker underligt, er n\u00e5r en modtagerjournalist beskriver Googles penge som: &#8220;udviklingsbistand&#8221; \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Partnere eller frenemies?<\/strong><br>Google beskriver sit forhold til medier som et &#8220;partnerskab&#8221; og kalder gerne medievirksomheders &#8216;partnere i sin offentlige kommunikation&#8217; &#8211; hvorimod disse &#8216;partnere&#8217; ikke rigtig kan lide dette udtryk. I fem interview bruger medierne derimod begrebet \u201dfrenemy\u201d (sammentr\u00e6kning af friend og enemy) til at beskrive forholdet til Google. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uanset de termer, der beskriver velynders forhold til modtager, sikrer Googles forskellige former for donationer, at virksomheden altid har indflydelse p\u00e5 debatter om nyhedsmediets fremtid. Dette sker ogs\u00e5 p\u00e5 konferencer og andre begivenheder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Den mest prestigefyldte af Googles begivenheder for mediebranchen, hvor mediernes fremtid ogs\u00e5 diskuteres, er &#8220;Newsgeist&#8221;, en &#8220;un-conference&#8221; organiseret af Google &#8211; sammen med Knight Foundation i USA og alene i Europa &#8211; for at samle &#8220;praktikere og t\u00e6nkere fra verdener af journalistik, teknologi og offentlig politik,\u201dsom det h\u00e6vdes p\u00e5 begivenhedswebstedet (newsgeist.org, udateret). Dette er et klart eksempel p\u00e5: \u201d<em>De n\u00e6re b\u00e5nd, som tech-selskabet Alphabet og dets datterselskab Google opretholder med nyhedsindustrien, handler imidlertid ikke kun om penge. Teknologi er ogs\u00e5 et afg\u00f8rende aspekt &#8211; n\u00e5r alt kommer til alt er udgivelse p\u00e5 Internettet praktisk talt ut\u00e6nkelig uden Google<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Definition af en generation af mediefolk<\/strong><br>Google holder sig ogs\u00e5 konstant relevant for mediebranchen ved at organisere kurser (gratis, selvf\u00f8lgelig) over hele kloden i brugen af \u200b\u200bGoogle-v\u00e6rkt\u00f8jer, der kr\u00e6ves til forskning og dag-til-dag-arbejde i nyhedsrummet, det kan eksempelvis v\u00e6re  <em>&#8220;Storytelling med Google Earth, &#8220;Data Journalistik&#8221;<\/em>, <em>&#8221; Unders\u00f8gelsesrapportering\u201d <\/em>eller noget helt andet<em> (Google News Initiative 2020a). <\/em>Google fokuserer p\u00e5 skalering gennem f.eks et &#8220;Train the Trainer&#8221;-program, som blev udviklet sammen med <em>Society of Professional Journalists<\/em> og som if\u00f8lge virksomheden allerede har undervist mere end 20.000 journalister i USA og Canada alene i brugen af \u200b\u200bGoogle-produkter (Society of Professional Journalists 2020). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Desuden har Google finansieret branche-events, stipendier og tr\u00e6ningsprogrammer, der ikke alene giver unge journalister et skridt op p\u00e5 karrierestigen, men som ogs\u00e5 giver Google plads ved bordet under branchediskussioner; S\u00e5ledes definerer Google ogs\u00e5 en generation af spirende mediefolk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Journalistisk gennemsigtighed &#8211; ogs\u00e5 for journalister?<\/strong><br>Det er ingen nyhed, at Googles algoritmer er skjult i en sort boks, men journalister er omvendt kendte for deres arbejde med at afd\u00e6kke og skabe transparens. Derfor er det m\u00e5ske en overraskelse, at flertallet af dem, som har modtaget st\u00f8tte, vil udvise gennemsigtighed for s\u00e5 vidt ang\u00e5r specifikke finansieringsbel\u00f8b. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For nu at v\u00e6re mere pr\u00e6cis: If\u00f8lge unders\u00f8gelsen var kun \u00e8n af de ti st\u00f8rste modtagere i Tyskland villige&nbsp;til&nbsp;at udlevere specifikke tal vedr\u00f8rende finansieringen fra Google.
