These operations can use a combination of methods, such as false news, disinformation, or networks of\u00a0 fake accounts aimed at manipulating public opinion.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Those are the words in a <a href=\"https:\/\/fbnewsroomus.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/04\/facebook-and-information-operations-v1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook-report <\/a>on how Facebook has been used to manipulate citizens. The report lists following abuses:<\/p>\n<p><strong>False News. <\/strong>News articles that purport to be factual, but which contain intentional misstatements\u00a0 of fact with the intention to arouse passions, attract viewership, or deceive.<br \/>\n<strong>False Amplifiers<\/strong> are fake accounts aimed at manipulating public opinion. That is &#8220;coordinated activity by inauthentic accounts with the intent of manipulating\u00a0 political discussion&#8221; (e.g., by discouraging specific parties from participating in discussion, or amplifying sensationalistic voices over others).<br \/>\n<strong>Disinformation.<\/strong> Inaccurate or manipulated information\/content that is spread intentionally.<br \/>\nWhat is Facebook doing<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Providing a set of customizable\u00a0 security and privacy features, including multiple options\u00a0 for two -factor authentication and in- product marketing to encourage adoption ;<\/li>\n<li>Notifications to specific people if the y have been targeted by sophisticated attackers, with\u00a0 custom recommendations depending on the threat model;<\/li>\n<li>Proactive notifications to people who have yet to be targeted, but whom we believe may\u00a0 be at risk based on the behavior of particular malicious actors;<\/li>\n<li>In some cases, direct communication with likely targets;<\/li>\n<li>Where appropriate, working directly with government bodies responsible for election\u00a0 protections to notify and educate people who may be at greater risk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>False amplifier accounts manifest differently around the globe and\u00a0 even within regions. In some instances dedicated, professional groups attempt to influence political\u00a0 opinions on social media with large numbers of sparsely populated fake accounts that are used to\u00a0 share and engage with content at high volumes. In other cases, the networks may involve behavior\u00a0 by a smaller number of carefully curated accounts that exhibit authentic characteristics with well-developed online personas.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4071 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/dataethics.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/manipulation1-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"276\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dataethics.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/manipulation1-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dataethics.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/manipulation1-1024x574.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dataethics.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/manipulation1-220x123.jpg 220w, https:\/\/dataethics.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/manipulation1-250x140.jpg 250w, https:\/\/dataethics.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/manipulation1-355x199.jpg 355w, https:\/\/dataethics.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/manipulation1-730x409.jpg 730w, https:\/\/dataethics.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/manipulation1-90x50.jpg 90w, https:\/\/dataethics.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/manipulation1.jpg 1446w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 276px) 100vw, 276px\" \/>Russia was behind Trump<\/strong><br \/>\nDuring the 2016 US Presidential election season, Facebook says that information was stolen from systems and services outside Facebook, that fake personas and pages were created to amplify specific news accounts and direct people that the false news got organic reach.\u00a0 But, says the report, &#8220;the reach of known operations during the US election of 2016 was statistically very small compared to overall engagement on political issues.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Facebook report does not contradict a <a href=\"https:\/\/web-beta.archive.org\/web\/20170421222356\/https:\/www.dni.gov\/files\/documents\/ICA_2017_01.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report from the US National Intelligence Office<\/a> from January saying:<br \/>\n<em>Putin Ordered Campaign To Influence US Election We assess with high confidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an influence\u00a0 campaign in 2016 aimed at the US presidential\u00a0 election, the consistent goals of which were to\u00a0 undermine public faith in the US democratic\u00a0 process, denigrate Secretary Clinton, and harm her\u00a0 electability and potential presidency.\u00a0 We further\u00a0 assess Putin and the Russian Government\u00a0 developed a clear preference for President-elect\u00a0 Trump.\u00a0 When it appeared to Moscow that\u00a0 Secretary Clinton was likely to win the election, the Russian influence campaign then focused on undermining her expected presidency.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Facebook report does not mention the highly critisized <em>real-name policy,<\/em> where Facebook once shot down accounts made by real people using a pseudonym &#8211; a practise that has been stopped and are used by many Facebook users.
