The EU Human-Centric Approach to AI: Foundational Elements for a Global Framework<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The \u201chuman-centric\u201d approach to AI has gained traction in international technology governance and diplomacy. However, while it is today explicitly stated as the foundation of multiple AI governance frameworks and principles worldwide, there is still no consistent pathway, nor a definitional grounding work that frames the human-centric approach to AI.<\/p>\n

This report has been developed for the purpose of defining and clarifying the key features of the EU\u2019s human-centric approach to AI. It is authored by DataEthics.eu\u2019s Research Director Gry Hasselbalch and affiliated scholar Carolina Aguerre.<\/p>\n

White Paper: Data Pollution & Power<\/span><\/h3>\n

Data Pollution is to the big data age what smog was to the industrial age. Our response to data pollution will develop much like our reaction to traditional forms of pollution\u2014just much faster and hopefully with dedication and great force. This white paper describes a nascent environmental data pollution movement. It frames data pollution in the context of powers and interests exploring eight domains in which data pollution has the greatest impact: Nature, Science & Innovation, Democracy, Human Rights, Infrastructure, Decision-Making, Global Opportunities, and Time. The main objective is to ensure that data pollution of AI in particular is included in the global sustainable development agenda.<\/span><\/p>\n

DataEthics – The New Competitive Advantage<\/h3>\n

The book<\/a> Data Ethics\u00a0\u2013 The New Competitive Advantage<\/em>\u00a0published in 2016 by Gry Hasselbalch and Pernille Tranberg was one of the early books to describe not only the privacy implications of the commercial exploitation of big data, but the broader social and ethical implications. It pictured the emerging movement of the mid 2010s to take back control of our data from powerful big tech Silicon Valley actors.<\/p>\n

It was the first book to use the term “data ethics” and describe it in detail.
