In the wake of the surveillance capitalistic business models, where big companies have taken control of personal data, a new branch of privacy-preserving technologies has emerged: Personal Data Stores, which are also called data trusts, data sharing intermediaries, PODS (personal online data stores), personal information management systems (PIMs), Vendor Relationship Management, my data, self data, the internet of me.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Personal Data Stores are technologies letting users take back and remain in control of their own data. They promise to help users protect their data\/privacy and empower themselves with their data. The idea is supported by GDPR with individual data rights and the right to portability and also by the draft to a Data Governance Act, which will regulate these new data intermediaries. If they gain traction, the dynamics of not only social media and shopping will change, so will health, news, banking, public service and most other parts of the new, digital economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At DataEthics.eu, we’ve conducted – together with Jon Lund, an independent digital expert – what we believe to be the first survey of PDS’. We identified 28 of them (see below) and got answers from 13. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Full disclosure: Jon Lund is an affiliated (non-paid) specialist with Data for Good Foundation PDS and during the research process, he took employment with the German PDS polypoly. Pernille has accepted being non-paid advisory board member in both polypoly and Data For Good Foundation.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
